An Interview with Mahuaa TV Head

Last year, P K Tiwari surprised everyone by launching Mahuaa TV, the first Bhojpuri entertainment channel. On the completion of one year, we had a long discussion about his experience with the channel, and his future plans:

What was the reason for starting Mahuaa, when no one even dreamt of the same?

Bhojpuri is the second biggest spoken language in India after Hindi, so we decided to launch a channel in this language. Also< I belong to Bhojpuria area, so it was a way to give back to our soil. Bhojpuri is not only restricted to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar but the people of the region are spread throughout the length and breadth of the country. They are also spread across the world in the countries like US, Canada, Guyana, Mauritius, Surinam, Fiji, Singapore, Netherland, Malaysia etc. So, initially our idea was to entertain people in their own language (Bhojpuri), and we have been quite successful in the same.

How many viewers you were planning to target?

As I told you Bhojpuri is the second largest spoken language after Hindi in India, so we were pretty sure that we can capture a big market.

What do you feel after one year?

Of course, I am feeling good because when you see your child growing you always feel happy and similarly Mahuaa is like my brain child

How was the experience in first year?

I think, I have been successful in my thought as today not only in UP and Bihar but all over India Mahuaa has become popular. There has been huge demand of set top boxes from cable operators and who have been distributing the channel free of cost because of its popularity. We have received request right from Rajasthan, Jaisalmer, Ganganagar to the parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Your channel has been blamed for dividing the people from Bihar & UP on the base of your reality show "Sur Sangram ", what do you say?

There is a difference between war and competition, it’s a competition of talent and I think even there is competition between the two talented member of the same family then you can't say that its dividing the family.

Now, what are your future plans?

We are trying our best to fulfill our viewer’s expectations. We are coming up with very good shows like Malkain (family drama), Ramayan, some children and youth shows and also some good reality shows. We have kept every age group in our mind. We have also introduced news from UP and Bihar as people leaving in far off places wanted to get News about their place.

Do you think will Mahuaa will be able to break the audience of other channels because the image of Bhojpuri is not very good in the market?

We already broke it as some of our shows are really doing very good and we are getting very positive feedback from our viewers. And as I told you, Mahuaa is here to break this negative image of Bhojpuria people, and to an extent we have done also.

Other Channel’s are gaining TRP by raising the problems of UP and Bihar, why Mahuaa is not broadcasting such kind of shows?

It was initiated by our show ‘Bahubali’, and very soon we are coming up again with some issues related to UP, Bihar

Which is your favorite show on your channel?

All the shows of my channel are my favorite.

After one year, whom do you want to thank?

I would like to thank all our viewers, who have shown their faith, and of course my entire Mahuaa team

Sur Sangram concludes on a musical note

PATNA — A huge crowd thronged the sprawling ground of historic Gandhi Maidan in Patna as artistes performed live on stage on the occasion of Mahua TV’s musical reality show – Sur Sangram.
The Bhojpuri programme, hugely popular in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh concluded on a beautiful note as both the finalists – Alok Kumar of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh’s Mohan Rathore were declared joint winner. Both participants got a prize money of Rs 25 lakh each and also handed over the keys to their new motorbikes.
“To my mind, Bhojpuri folk music is the genre that is most intoxicating to the mind of the people here, because it is the only kind of music with the fragrance and earthen appeal of the native soil,” Dr Shivkant Sinha, a resident of Motihari who travelled to Patna to watch the programme, said.
As some spectators tried to catch the glimpse of the performers on the dais, one of the pandals collapsed causing injury to 10 persons, the sources said. The injured were admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital where the condition of two was stated to be critical.
